Rhetoric, sentence and image-making, rhythm and pattern

Generating imagery with creative sentence structures

A workshop that engages with creative writing at the level of language: how to generate imagery, writing with pattern in rhetorical strategies, and manipulating syntax to move away from the compound sentence and the participial phrase. Books I’ll use for examples include: Stanley Fish How to Write a Sentence and How to Read One; Mark Forsyth The Elements of Eloquence: How to Turn the Perfect English phrase; Michael Noll The Writer’s Field Guide to the Craft of Fiction; Virginia Tufte’s Artful Sentences: Syntax as Style; and James Wood How fiction Works. Participants can bring along small of writing to work on, or we’ll generate some text.
