Tom Carment

Tom Carment was born in Sydney in 1954 and has been painting landscapes and portraits ever since. He is also a writer whose stories and essays have been published nationally. There are no dramatic plotlines in his stories, but each glimpse of life is described with care, with a determination to stay on the seam of his own experience and avoid clichés.

During the ’80s he travelled to Africa and then France, living overseas for four years and producing a book of writings, paintings and drawings, Days and Nights in Africa (1985). In 2014 he published Seven Walks – Cape Leeuwin to Bundeena, a book of walks in “wild” Australia. The book is illustrated with photographs by Michael Wee and Carment’s delicately observed watercolours, drawings as well as stories of each walk which interweave history with anecdote, humour with observation.

Tom’s latest book is Womerah Lane: Lives and Landscapes (Published by Giramondo) – a collection of non-fiction stories and essays illustrated by his paintings and drawings.
