- Science Writing: Science Fact, Science Fiction & The Environment
Saturday 8 June
Marty Branagan is a lecturer in peace studies at UNE, Armidale and an environmental sci-fi writer. He coordinates the course, Active Resistance: Contemporary Nonviolence and has recorded a series of interviews with ABC Local Radio about Australian environmental campaigning. He also coordinates Globalisation as if People and Ecosystems Matter, and helped create a new degree, Master of Environmental Advocacy, after earlier helping develop a new unit, Politics and the Environment: Intersecting Crises.
Marty has also tutored at the Oorala Centre, worked in remote communities in Australia and Borneo, and with Indigenous and non-Indigenous ‘youth at risk’ in art-based programs through TAFE NSW.
He is the author of Global Warming, Militarism and Nonviolence: The Art of Active Resistance (2013), and his new novel is Locked On! The Seventh and Most Illegal in the Hitchhiker’s Guide Trilogy (2018). It’s a fictionalised account of Australia’s first blockade of a coal mine at Leard Forest near Narrabri, and the successful blockade of gas extraction on prime farmland at Bentley, near Lismore.
‘Ever wondered what it’s like to feel so strongly about an issue that you’ll go to jail for it? This novel, based on real-life environmental blockades but set within a humorous sci-fi universe, is a journey to the centre of nonviolent civil disobedience by an author who has been there repeatedly over decades. In a hilarious romp through the universe we meet eco-pirates, space heroines, Indigenous people and farmers united against corporate greed, corrupt governments and environmental destruction. With our world plagued by wars and global warming, its insights into the possibilities of nonviolence action bring hope and inspiration. With incisive social/political commentary, witty dialogue and some laugh-out-loud moments, it’s ultimately a love story: love for each other, for place and for doing what you believe in. So stick out your thumb, strap yourself in and get ready for a wild ride.’ Lulu
