Tyree Barnette

Tyree Barnette is a transplant to Sydney originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. He and his partner Tracina moved to Sydney in 2012.

Since 2016, Tyree has been a member of the Sweatshop Literacy Movement where he has written several pieces for SBS Life about being a Black American living in Australia. He has also contributed to Sweatshop anthologies including Racism: Stories on Fear, Hate and Bigotry, This Little Red Thing and Love. 

Tyree most enjoys writing about his experience as an African-American in Australia including seeing Black American culture on display, racial nuances he’s encountered, and fatherhood. He has written extensively about these themes and more in his 2026 debut novel, Stolen Man on Stolen Land: Being African-American in Australia.
