STEVE MORELLI is a Christian Brother working with Aboriginal people since 1980, first in Sydney then on the mid-north coast among Gooris. In 1986, he began working with language revival among Gumbaynggirr people in Kempsey who had been removed from further north. He formed the Gumbaynggirr Language and Culture Group which produced a first dictionary and published Gumbaynggirr Dreamings in English and Gumbaynggirr versions. Steve learnt from local speakers like Len de Silva and from Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), and produced texts, songs and taught in adults’ and children’s classes. In the late 90s, he produced accredited Cert. II and IV courses and co-taught. He collected and taught Yaygirr language in Maclean, and produced a Yaygirr dictionary and grammar. He collected and co-edited dreaming stories and co-wrote A comparative linguistic analysis of Gumbaynggirr Dreaming stories in three dialects for AIATSIS. He is interested in Aboriginal spirituality and culture and linkages to his own and other spiritualities.
