LYN GAIN is the founder of Valentine Press, an independent publishing company with headquarters in Bellingen NSW.
After a successful career in social advocacy in Sydney, and many years of writing and publishing books on social policy, Lyn left her job as Director of the NSW Council of Social Service and wrote Witch Girl and the Push. Valentine Press was originally set up in 2013 to publish that one book.
The expansion of Valentine Press into a publishing company with a focus on partnership with new authors was the result of that experience. It was particularly shocking to discover that traditional publishers offering financial partnerships did not acknowledge in their costings the creativity and labour that authors put into their work. Valentine Press partially redresses that inequity by providing free labour for editing, formatting, marketing, etc. Other direct costs are shared equally, as are the profits.
Risk averse traditional publishers seek “more of the same” to suit their perceptions of what will sell. Valentine Press seeks different and more powerful books. Large profits are not the main aim, but rather the widest possible distribution of books with high quality writing and something important to say, fiction or non-fiction. www.valentinepress.com.au
