LAWRENCE GIBBONS launched the Sydney City Hub in August of 1995. Twenty years later, the City Hub is the last independent community newspaper distributed in inner city Sydney. Based on alternative newspapers in North America, the City Hub is distributed weekly from Bondi to Balmain throughout Australia’s largest urban centre and content also appears digitally at www.altmedia.net.au.
Over the years, the Hub has chronicled countless community battles with developers, exposed several secret deals and has kept publicly elected officials accountable to the public. Several Hub features have been celebrated on ABC’s Media Watch, including an investigative piece written by Lawrence Gibbons exposing a sponsorship deal between Chiquita Bananas and Bananas in Pyjamas.
Over the years, the paper has reviewed tens of thousands of plays, exhibitions, films and concerts, thus being a major contributor to audience awareness of cultural production in Sydney.
Prior to launching the City Hub, Lawrence worked for alternative newspapers in San Francisco, New York, Toronto and Honolulu. He holds a BA in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and attended the MFA program in Creative Writing at Columbia University in New York. He is working towards a PhD at Western Sydney University where he is researching the massive Bays Precinct redevelopment project which sprawls from Pyrmont to Balmain. www.altmedia.net.au
