- Breaking into the market: four authors tell how they did it

A writer, journalist, actor and drama teacher, HELEN CHEBATTE has received acknowledgements for her work from various writing organisations. Her first young adult novel, Bro, won the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Frustrated Writers’ Mentorship Competition for unpublished works, rewarding Helen with a mentorship and the inaugural Charlotte Waring Barton Award. Bro was published by Hardie Grant Egmont in early 2016.
Let’s Lunch, her multicultural picture book text, was shortlisted in the CBCA Frustrated Writers’ Mentorship Competition as well as the Children’s and Young Adult Writers’ Aspiring Writers Competition in Queensland. Arion, Son of a Dragon Rider, her young reader fantasy novel set in ancient Mesopotamia, was shortlisted in the Varuna Publisher Fellowship Program.
Helen also works as an actor in film, television and theatre. Her credits include guest roles on Crownies, Deadly Women, All Saints, The Surgeon, the acclaimed feature film Cedar Boys and, more recently, the romantic comedy, Alex and Eve. www.helenchebatte.com
