Bernard Zuel is a freelance writer, critic and interviewer. He written for Rock Australia Magazine, Rolling Stone, Street Press and Penrith Press, and was the senior music writer and chief critic for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, where he spent 25 years covering the arts.

He currently contributes to The Guardian, Rhythms, The Right Note and ABC Radio. Zuel is a judge of the Australian Music Prize award.

On departing the Sydney Morning Herald in 2017, Bernard wrote If 25 years at the Sydney Morning Herald—and 32 all up in journalism, so far—has taught me anything it is this: anyone who tells you they’ve already seen the best gig, heard the best album, found the best talent they ever will, run from them if you can; aggressively ignore them if you can’t.
